Awareness Poster

The issue I chose to make an awareness poster on is homelessness. According to the coalition for the homeless in "December 2021, there were 48,691 homeless people, including 15,227 homeless children, sleeping each night in New York City’s main municipal shelter system. A near-record 18,704 single adults slept in shelters each night in December 2021" (Coalition for the Homeless, 2022).

A homeless person has a higher rate of issues such as mental illness, addiction, and other severe health problems. With nowhere to go and no one to help them, I think this issue has a severe impact on the human population. With numbers only rising and more people becoming homeless, this is an issue that requires consistent programming and assistance long before a person in any country has to live on the street.

Political Issue's -Hijack sketches

                                                Issue one- Reparations Now!

The image I chose is of hands in breaking the chains from the bondage of slavery. Although the broken chains are symbolic of breaking free from slavery, the image is simultaneously a representative of what happened once the chains of slavery were broken, the reparations promised back in 1865 were never given to this date. For my hijack image sketch, I drew hands holding money, the chains are off those hands and broken. This image is to show that moving forward what was promised was lived up u to, so the hands received what they earned. The next image shows hands holding checks and the rope, to a mule. Additional ideas are a list of presidents with a ‘failed’ stamp and a reparation now picket sign signifying that throughout the long list of presidents, none met the task either. The check and pen are made out to reparations dated to back pay those owed since the 1800s. Lastly, surrounded by broken chains that are on the ground or left behind, hands are holding a bag each representing 40 acres and a mule.

Issue two- Climate change.

Climate change is an issue brought up for many years, some believe it's real and others believe it doesn’t exist. My original image is of the earth looking whole and healthy. For my hijack I’ve sketched the earth falling apart pieces are missing, on one end of the earth has a lot of rain, the other temps rise and the next is freezing over, this represents how the earth is experiencing climates that are new or more extreme signifying that the earth is changing and if we do nothing about climate change it will fall apart, in other words, it's being destroyed as this happens a man wearing a hat with views that are blind, (because he’s blindfolded)  If his thoughts are to make America great again (that’s starting somewhere) and his mouth calls climate change fake then his views are blind, ultimately leaving the word to continue being destroyed right in front his eyes.

The additional ideas are a television showing divided broken earth in the background overlapped by two politicians Al Gore who is speaking up about climate change verse Donald Trump who is calling it fake. This is being viewed on television for the world to see. The next image signifies the earth sitting on top of hands held over the views of the television (seen nationwide) with talk bubbles representing opposite views on the earth, either way, it's in OUR HANDS! The hands are noted as brown and light peach-colored to represent different races are holding the earth.

Lastly, in looking for earth images I found an image of a seemingly older person's hand reaching out and handing a younger person hand the earth looking healthy and strong. In this image, the hand represents our present times and what we do which is ultimately handed down to our children and future generations. It matters what we do now because it will affect them later on. These images pertain to climate change in the sense that if it’s continued to be ignored, looked at blindly, or just cast aside, our loved ones, this planet, earth's future will be left in shambles all resulting from our inability to conserve resources and not ignore signs from our earth.

Issue three- Defense spending verse social welfare state

The image I chose for this issue was the scales of justice and a military tank. The scales represent two issues weighing unequally, however, both are equally important. My hijack sketches include a military tank rolling over rolls of money and shooting rolls of money labeled big tech tank, signifying the amount of upgraded tech that is put into military vehicles, etc., while hands hold an empty bowl, over money. A jet shooting out dollar signs representing the money spent on advancing military equipment. The scales of justice are weighing the two issues a military tank with money symbols on it verse a homeless and hungry person with empty pockets. Two sketches of a tent that will appear broken and torn with a sign on it saying home sweet home this home has a homeless person begging for help along with another homeless person holding a sign that says I am hungry. This issue continues to go on as research and development as pictured (and Republican & Democratic) hands keep funding the military-industrial complex. This represents the focus on putting more and more money into defense spending while others have no home and no food. Although I think defense is important, I think there should be a point where enough money is allocated to one area and others in need are continuously ignored.

I saw this image and thought of an additional idea. Mister monopoly man (the wealthy) is happy and dancing on the flag because he's content with what he's obtained from the country.  The other image is of 3 thin Americans still waiting for help from the country.
